Remember book reports when we were in school? For some they were a dreaded terrible thing, for others they were fun ways to recall your favorite book and an easy format to tell someone what the book was about. I've decided to post some reports of books I've read recently; let's jump right in.
This book called to me from a Deli in Brooklyn. There was a small bookshelf with free books! Ya'll know how I love books! The Bookshelf was put there by Books x Bodegas, there is even a little QR code in the book so you can let them know what you thought of it. This book was also a total tear jerker.
I also wrote and published 7 books check them out here: https://www.lulu.com/search?sortBy=RELEVANCE&page=1&q=Jodie+Spartz&pageSize=10&adult_audience_rating=00
Author: James Bird
Title: The Second Chance of Benjamin Waterfalls
Main Characters: Benjamin, Niimi, Benjamin's Father, Wendy, George and Niimi's Father
Setting: This book took place in Grand Portage, Minnesota and on a Ojibwe reservation.
Plot: This story is about second chances and forgiveness. It touches on different life challenges and tips on overcoming them. It challenges everyday thinking and gives the reader a chance to reflect on themselves. It involves the crime, the ultimatum, a huge culture shock, family tension, how a community reacts; transformation and a new path.
Personal Endorsement: This book allowed me to travel deeper into myself. I could relate to the anger and the acting out because of it. I could relate to the transformation and the power of it. Let me share with you some of the things that stood out to me while reading this book:
* There was a song by one of the characters that I just completely felt and wanted to share she sings: If today doesn't kill me, tomorrow might. But I won't go easily-just ask last night. Yes, I slayed yesterday, and defeated the day before. When I got knocked down, I got back up and asked for more. I massacred Monday, I tore apart Tuesday, I buried Wednesday with Thursday. I finished Friday, and drowned the weekend in the creek. And all of that was just last week. Right now is upon me, the past is dead and gone, and I'm starting my future, singing BRING IT ON!
* Can you see music? Taste music? Touch music? "No, It's weightless. Odorless. Invisible. And yet it can break a heart and melt a heart and put a heart back together for millions of people in a matter of two minutes. If that's not magic I don't know what is.
* My body is a world. In that world there are three warriors. A SuperHero, someone who needs help, and a Villain. But there can only be one leader of my world. I've been listening to the Villain for a long time.
* All people should come with a warning label tattooed on them that says, still learning bear with me.
* I'm not going to tell him to snap out of it or tell him there's nothing to be afraid of, because that will only make him angry. I should know; it made me angry every time I was told that.
