When I think of a Crossing Guard I think of a person that ensures people, especially children, cross streets safely by pausing traffic, leading people, and keeping an eye out for hazards This requires sharp observational skills, quick decision-making, and clear communication to manage traffic flow. They report unsafe driving or conditions to authorities. They use stop signs and signals to pause vehicles in safe gaps in traffic, protecting people on their way to and from school or other locations.
That is an exact description of what a Crossing Guard does. This Philadelphia Native the most amazing Crossing Guard has exceeded all expectations. This man does not just cross these adults and children he goes above and beyond. Passing out encouragement, sometimes advice because it is asked of him. When these adults and children come out of their homes they are excited that he is there. They stop and talk with him, they share their life experience with him and they allow him to share his. The adults and children actually make him apart of their day.
There are even people that try to gift him for his services and these things he cannot and will not take. It sometimes upsets the person but he is true to his duty. There are adults that will wait at the corner just for him to cross them so they can have a good interaction. This man is not just a Crossing Guard he has become a Pillar of the community. In case you didn't know a Pillar of the community is an admired and respected influential person who provides significant support, stability and positive contributions to their neighborhood.
The Children and Adults of the neighborhood have come to expect to see him in the mornings and afternoon's. The children always have questions about their future or they just want to tell him about their day. The adults use him to vent when they are excited and even when they are angry. He is seriously an active listener and he seems to always know what to say to make someone's day better. All day he hears "Thank you for your service", "Thank you for protecting us", "We appreciate you looking out for us".
It doesn't end there he has helped countless people with community resources and will even give out hand warmers in the winter for people in need of them. This man is much more than a Crossing Guard he is an Angel on the corner in a yellow and black uniform. Angels are real and they come in many forms. Thank you Sir for your service and I hope you reach every height life has for you.
