You know that feeling when you need a job BAD! You fill out a bunch of applications and either nobody's getting back to you or your just getting a bunch of rejections. It's a wild feeling but I definitely can relate. That's how I was feeling this past June into the beginning of July. I had been in NYC for a month. My side hustle was not popping all like that and my savings were no more. I woke up one morning just feeling over it for the most part. I made myself a cup of coffee and turned on the Bronx news. Low and behold they were having a job fair and it started in a couple hours.
I was about to do absolutely nothing that day, so I got myself up and got ready for the job fair. I showed up soon as it started. I interviewed for a couple jobs and they said they would get back to me. I was feeling defeated, I was hyped about the on the spot interviews and really hoped I'd be leaving with a job that day. Before giving up hope, I mosyed into the last room; there I was able to sit down with a guy about a commercial cleaning gig. Now y'all already know I do residential cleaning so I figured hey, why not try it. By July 4th I was working for a baseball stadium. Ok I thought to myself, this maybe interesting.
Upon starting the job I immediately noticed that there were so many different cultures of people doing so many different things. It was like a well oiled machine. There were over 100 employees and everyone was doing their part to ensure that the baseball players and fans had a nice clean environment, before and after every game or concert that was held. Now each cleaning company is contracted from a outside company that is not part of the stadium. The company I worked for had a manager that was literally the worst. If there was a picture that said, this is what bad management looks like her face would surely be next to it.
However the company keeps her and they even warned us about her in orientation. It's also really hard to get her in trouble for some of the shit she pulls. I've never had a problem with her per say. I also don't allow her stanky energy to ruin my day. I definitely witnessed her doing trifling things. Like for instance, we came to work one day and corporate was giving out these really big cookies, that had Thank You written on them. The people from corporate were giving them out to everyone with an ID badge and thanking them for work well done. Everyone was allowed to get one except for apparently night shift.
We didn't know this because everyone was getting one and the people from corporate walked right up on us said Thank You and gave it to us. Mean lady shows up talkin about the fact that we couldn't have the cookies. So much so she began screaming and literally snatching them out of the employees hands. After she created a stack that she could no longer carry; she walked up on the people that gave them to us. Screamed that we are not allowed to have them and shoved them back into their hands. I looked and could see that the people had confused looks on their faces. They took them back and continued on.
This is another true account from an employee. He stated that he went to grab his boots out of the locker room and go home. Upon leaving mean lady stopped him and interrogated him about the boots. She screamed at him and told him that they were not his and that she had caught him stealing. He said there were a lot of people in the area and someone must've went to get another supervisor. The supervisor came and confirmed they were infact the employees boots. He said she never even gave him a chance to speak and he felt so embarrassed he almost cried. To make matters worse she didn't even apologize, just walked off as if nothing happened. There were so many stories about this woman too many to list here.
On another note the employees were awesome. I'm knowing I met some of NY finest. We even started our own lil squad. Our supervisor was lit and the upper management was mad that he wouldn't treat us as horrible as they were. He even said that he couldn't understand why he couldn't just treat us like people doing a job and not like he was an overseer on a plantation. The work was already physically and mentally taxing and the shift left us exhausted. Even tho it felt like mean lady and her minion wanted us to be miserable. We found ways to stay upbeat throughout the shift and it really seemed as if it made her and minion more angry!
It was a lot of favoritism and night shift was not a favorite. At the end of the Season the stadium hosted a employee appreciation day. We were given tickets for free food and a gift bag. When we were in line for the gift bag, night shift was cut off and told we would get our bags at the end of our shift. The end of the shift came and we received no gift bag. Now I can see injustice pretty well and I don't usually just let it slip by without a fight. These days however I pick my battles and the gift bag battle was one I knew had no win. I understood the anger of my fellow employees because it wasn't fair. It seemed like every time the employees were to be appreciated we weren't included.
One of the employees just couldn't back down. He was apart of our squad but we knew it was a no win situation. He blew up so fast about it we didn't even get the chance to talk him out of it. He spazzed, fussed and cussed and ended up suspended for three days of the last 6 days. They said we would get a gift bag upon returning to work the following week. We didn't, I still wonder if mean lady and her minion had something to do with that. There was a union, it's said they were there to protect us from this kind of behavior. I have no clue what part they played because it doesn't seem like they were helping; but that's just my opinion.
On another note, I was promoted to a position called restaurants the last week of the season so I was separated from the squad. When it was all over we came together and threw a bowling party! We celebrated each other F their approval and our Supervisor came and partied with us. NY's finest!
